Antibiotic and sulfonamides test kits

Chr. Hansen offers a complete range of antibiotic test kits to prevent the negative effects of antibiotic residues and enhance process control in the dairy industry.

Copan Test

The Copan Test is a broad-spectrum test capable of detecting beta-lactams, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, aminoglycosides and macrolydes. It utilizes a B. stearothermophilus spore suspended in media.

The Copan Test kit contains:

  • a gel matrix with Bacillus stearothermophilus var. calidolactis spores, nutrients;
  • a pH indicator (bromocresol purple).

B. stearothermophilus spores are very stable at room temperature and need nutrients and heat to germinate and grow in its vegetative form. When B. stearothermophilus grows, it consumes the sugar present in the medium, releasing acid as a metabolite. The subsequent drop of pH results in a change in colour of the indicator, from purple to yellow. The nutrients required for growth by the B. stearothermophilus spores are already present in the agar medium - unlike other microbial tests which must be added in tablet form prior to testing.

Carefully peel back the foil cover then add 100 µl of milk sample to be tested using the special “no drop” pipettes provided with the kit.

Ensure to use a new pipette for each sample. Replace the foil and seal using adhesive tape.

Incubate the vials in a dry block heater or in a water bath (using a foam rack) at 64.5 °C.

Read the result after 2.5 - 3 hours (depending on the control time).

If the colour has changed to yellow, the test is negative.

If the colour has only changed slightly being yellow-purple, it is partially positive but the concentration of the inhibitory substances is below the sensitivity of the test.

If the colour remains purple after three hours of incubation the test is positive. A colour card is provided to facilitate result interpretation.

Copan Test Singles (25 or 100 tests)

Each kit contains either 25 or 100 vials with B. stearothermophilus medium and patented 100 μ l "no drop" disposable pipettes.

Using scissors carefully cut the required number of vials.

Copan Test Microplate (384 tests)

Each kit contains 4 microplates of 96 tests each (384 tests). The plates can be split into 6 strips with 16 tests each. Adhesive covers for incubation are provided with the test. Also contains a colour card for comparison of results.

This format is suitable for large scale testing.

Beta Star – rapid antibiotic test kit

The Beta Star kit is a receptor assay for rapid determination of ß-lactam antibiotics (e.g. penicillin, ampicillin etc.) in milk. The test is based on a specific ß-lactam receptor , a protein, linked to gold particles.

Beta Star 25

Beta Star 25 kit contains:

  • 25 vials (25 tests) with lyophilised receptor;
  • 25 test strips;
  • 1 syringe;
  • 25 tips.

Equipment needed: Incubator set at 47.5°C

Beta Star 100

Beta Star 100 kit contains 2 vials with lyophilised receptor, enough for 100 tests and 4 containers with 25 test strips each. Equipment needed: Incubator set at 47.5°C, micropipette and tips for 25µl and 100µl and 1350µl, 100 Eppendorf 1.5 ml conical tubes.

Unique Features of the Beta Star

  • Very Fast The test only takes 5 minutes to perform which makes it one of the fastest tests available.
  • Simple to use The Beta Star test is very easy to use and the interpretation of the result is unambiguous and simple.
